Tear The Place Up Up Up!

For those that have ever spoken to me about music you will know that I have a pretty eclectic taste in music. Part of it is a product of being a musician; the search for knowledge, inspiration etc. The other is just wanting to not limit myself to a genre/style since hell, I enjoy listening to a mixture of music!

It has been 8years since my favourite Alternative Rock band Skunk Anansie disbanded, back then I thought I would never have the chance to see Skin, Cass, Ace and Mark in the flesh. Then last year there were reports of them reuniting. I don’t think I have ever been so excited about the prospect of seeing a reformed band before. When they announced a European Tour at the beginning of this year I literally jumped for joy, then got my ass online and booked my tickets there and then. Brixton Accademy here I come!

6 months I have been stalking their myspace, facebook and official site. Reading every newsletter, replying to every announcement and generally being a huge fangirl. We were treated to three brand new tracks via their myspace “Tear The Place Up”, “Because of You” and “Squander” which felt like pure Skunk Anasie from the moment I heard them. I especially love “Tear The Place Up”.

Last night was the night and myself and my friend Coji, who is every much the Skunk Anansie fan I am and was perfect company. The gig was sold out and the atmosphere was electric! There was a real mixture of people, people I could feel felt exactly the same way I did. It had been too long and they had truly been missed.

The gig began with Skin storming on stage in the most fantastic silver tinsel cape and matching body suit. I was so hyped that I can’t even remember the running order, all I can remember was singing LOTS and my heart going at about 100mph. The entire gig was electric with the whole crowd moving, screaming, singing and clapping. Skin leaped and jumped around the stage, grinning all the while. My favourite part of the gig was just seeing how much fun the band were having. Nothing makes me enjoy music more than seeing that the band enjoy what they are playing!

Every one of their top hits were played and we were also treated to the new tracks, including one that they have yet to release online! Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the song, but in Skin’s own words – “This song is all about fucking!”. It was a great track and I can’t want to hear it again once it’s released. I was unlucky to be on the opposite side of any crowd surfing but we did get about 2meters away from Skin during the final song and Ace took some photos of the area I was in so hopefully I don’t look too crazy!

I’m still buzzing from the gig, I never thought I would ever see Skunk Anansie live. I hope they tour more in the future as they are truly a must see!

Gaming Pants

Whether you notice it or not, everyone has rituals they go through when they are planning to sit down and have a long gaming session. Whether it’s making sure you’ve bought enough munchies to get you through the day/night or simply wearing that, slightly worn out hoodie for comfort, everyone has their habits. Mine are no different.

This post it brought to you by Twitter and by the letter W, for Windows Updates which managed to nuke my planned blog update for today! Loooove you Vista!

Anyway, apparently while tweeting about my plans to buy some new “Gaming Pants” (that’s underwear, not trousers) for Assassin’s Creed II, I caused a bit of confusion and possibly alarm. For me, gaming in just a BIG comfy T-shirt and a pair of comfy gaming pants is just ideal. Nothing beats comfort like partial nudity and a duvet!

If I have been excited about a game for some time I want to make sure to be as comfortable as possible while playing it. For me gaming is an escapism and a welcome rest from working, although ironically I work with games! A common misconception people that work in the gaming industry – whether it’s journalists, PR managers or developers is that we get to play games all day at work. I can tell you now that is certainly not true, unless you are a games tester of course, and even then it’s not really “playing” more “breaking”. OK, I deviated from my point. Basically, comfort is key and here’s the steps I go through to make sure I am.

hair
First you need yourself, and preferably a bad hair day (as shown) to ensure that you cannot leave the house no matter what.

games
Next you will need the game and platform of your choice. I am currently trying to complete Beautiful Katamari.

notes_0
My next step is to decide what it is I want to do that day. I only do this when I am on a completion mission. If I have just got a game I will simply chill and play. But for games like Katamari I like to plan what I need to do. The calculator was for Lips as I was working out how many stars I needed and how many songs I needed to play to get to that amount.

pants
This is the most important stage. This is where I put on my gaming pants and a big, baggy t shirt. Preferably the shirt is gaming related, for example it is Left4Dead today. Sorry, no photos of me wearing said gaming pants – I’ll leave that pleasure to my housemate!

munchies
Almost there! This is the last stage. Munchies, munchies, munchies! Today I am being exceedingly English and having Tea and Crumpets. Yes I like Marmite – DON’T JUDGE MEEEE!

ready
Grab your duvet and get gaming!

London MCM Expo 16

zombie2
This October it was the 16th, yes 16TH, London MCM Expo and of course I was in attendance. This was the 5th MCM Expo I had attended on behalf of Ubisoft and it was by far the best!

Not only was the footfall incredible – over 38,000 people across two days! But the attendees were friendly and excel generally enthusiastic about the games we had on show. This was the first year that students and publications took the time to talk to me about Ubisoft and the games in depth. I love talking to fellow gamers at events, it’s by far my favourite aspect of my job.

On show we had controlled demos of Assassin’s Creed II and Splinter Cell: Conviction, as well as Rabbids Go Home Wii pods. The star of the show was definitely Panasonic’s incredible prototype 3D television displaying a hands-on demo of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game. We were lucky to have two Avatar developers at our stand giving demonstrations and talking to gamers. Kevin Shortt, Scriptwriter, and Brent George, Animation Director, were kind enough to do a panel on the Saturday explaining how the game ties with James Cameron’s movie, what it was like to work with him and was happy to answer any questions form the audience. There will hopefully be a video of the panel for you in the next few days!

OK, enough work talk.

stand Once again there was no cosplay for me. I feel like I’ve moved on from that hobby now and now I just enjoy looking at costumes. Part of me wished I had taken the time to do some photoshoots but after seeing the crappy weather I knew I had saved myself a lot of unnecessary stress. Sorry to those hoping to see lots of cosplay photos, I promise I’ll make it up to youy soon. Similarly I was glad not to be judging the Masquerade. It was the first Expo for two years that I hadn’t judged. Although I missed looking at the construction and detail of people’s costumes and spending time with the legendary Mr. Tony Lee, the inevitable cosplay drama was gladly avoided. It also gave me more time to concentrate on my work.

falcon-puuuuucnh It was lovely to see some familiar faces over the weekend including Jerome from Manga Entertainment, Hugh from Tartan, James, GG and Co. on the cosplay stand and of course lots of cosplayers. I wish I had more time to talk to the awesome guys from Khaos and Team Giblets, they’re some of my favourite people.

Unfortunately I didn’t get as many photos as I would have liked as most of my time was spent talking to fans and demoing games. There is however a small gallery below. If you’d like to see a wider range of photos head on over to Nert’s Gallery. He is a photo ninja and always captures some great moments – including some rather silly ones of me!
