I’m teaching myself to use Illustrator at the moment and pretty much failing miserably. I’m not very good at digital artwork. The layering system means that I am effectively working backwards compared to traditional painting methods I’m used to. With digital art you generally put down the line work first, then then colours and shading. With traditional paints, the colour and shading comes first, then the definition/line work. It messes with my brain a little.
Anyway! For my first attempt at a picture I thought I’d do a simple self-portrait. It’s a bit child-like and put my moth tattoo on the wrong side (oops!) but otherwise I’m happy with it.

Personally I think that’s great dude! Beautiful simple lines, lots of character and well coloured!
I’m no artist, but from what I’ve seen you can use some Digital Progs (never used illustrator before) in a traditional way, doing colours first and then building up with layers till you add the lines on afterwards. This is how most concept-art is done these days.

A lot of concept art is speed drawing these days. I’ve tried working in a traditional way in photoshop but not illustrator. I found it really, really frustrating and overly time consuming. http://spiralperspective.com/2010/01/bulbs-wip/ this was the last piece I did in that style and it’s still not finished. I’m even considering moving it to canvas as I really like the colour pallet and concept, just not the creation process.
I’ll certainly keep creating more digital artwork but traditional is my first love hehe

coming from a fellow illustrator i love this! <3
it embraces quite a nice blend of different cartoon/comic styles but with it's own uniqueness.
