New craft projects and some other odds’n'sods

You know you’ve been knitting too much when the sides of your fingers are covered in dry skin! I only began to knit last year, but I’ve been slowing teaching myself more and more techniques. This week I have been trying to get the hang of Intarsia knitting – a technique that allows you to create images using two or more colours. I’ve also been drawing up my own knitting patterns using some really useful online tools.

Now with my powers combined, I am Captain Pla… able to start a larger project I’ve wanted to do for some time: a knitted patchwork. I’m planing for it to feature many of my favourite insects and so I started with a dung beetle, or a Scarab for those that prefer a more flowery name.

I’m also working through a book my brother gave me for christmas that is full of some rather brilliant dinosaur patterns. Here’s the body of a Diplodocus I’ve started, I’ll post up pictures of the finished piece in a few days.

Other than becoming a crazy knitting lady, I’ve been planning the tattoo half-sleeve for my right arm, as well as helping Chris work with the wonderfully talented, Alice, on his first tattoo. It’ll be something Shadow of the Colossus related so watch out for future tattoo updates.

Gaming-wise I’ve been a bit distracted by all the crafting but I’ve almost hit 1000G on Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 and I managed to get my mitts on a copy of Atlus’ rather surreal puzzle game, Catherine. I’m hoping to get stuck into this week, especially after all the drama surrounding it and the general love/hate opinions of people reviewing it.

I’ll finish off this post with a picture of one of my Giant East African Snails (Achatina fulica) which came out of hibernation this weekend. Cute!

Constant Elevation Winter 2011

I did my second body suspension yesterday. I felt a much greater sense of freedom with two hooks that I didn’t get with the Angel suspension I did in the Summer.

I was hanging for just over an hour and was swinging for most of that time – it was so much fun! Really looking forward to the next event now and I’ve already racked up a list of different types of suspensions I want to try next year. I dragged my friend Steve from Daily Joypad along to see the event and he wanted to do some filming which produced the awesome video below!

The music is ‘The Night’ by School of Seven Bells.

The video contains images of body piercing. It’s not violent but some may find it uncomfortable to watch.

Big thanks to the lovely Rolf Buchholz for the wonderful photos!

Tattoo Cover-up

I love Rick Genest’s tattoos, he is fondly called Zombie Boy for a reason. He was one of the first heavily tattooed people I’d ever seen. In the last few years he’s become even more famous after being chosen by stylist Nicolas Formichetti to model for Mulger’s spring collection, featured in Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” video and now he’s the face of Dermablend make-up – a strong make-up designed to cover tattoos.

It looks the same, to me. I guess I’m just used to being in my own skin. – Zombie Boy

It’s really strange seeing him without his prominent facial tattoos but it must have been even stranger for him. If I were him I’d want to go surprise a few friends/family! The video and behind the scenes video are below.

Feet Complete

Today I dragged Chris to Divine Canvas in London to see Alice so she could finish my foot tattoos! This session was much shorter and involved a lot less twitching. In my last update you can see the results of the first session, today’s photos are below.

foottattoo7 Sorry for the pastey/weird photo, I think I was in the middle of laughing when this was taken.
foottattoo6 The left foot is healed which is why it doesn’t look as vibrant. You can clearly see the swelling on my right foot which actually jiggles as I walk right now. It will go down pretty fast.

I’m really, really happy with the result! Alice did such a wonderful job of designing and tattooing this. I can’t wait to show them off once healed.

Intrepid Jewelry

My new large gauge earrings from Intrepid Jewelry finally arrived yesterday! They’re made from ebony and are just what I wanted: enough weight to be comfortable and tapered enough to be able to stretch up my right ear to match my left (0g).

I can’t wait to get both my lobes to a 0g, I’ve been so lazy with my lobe stretching the last few years. Talking of lazy… I really need to get my fringe trimmed!

Scarification plans and ponderings

I’ve been thinking about my tattoo and scarification plans lately. Mainly to do with finishing my foot tattoos and designing my right hand half-sleeve and getting my second scarification done.

When I had my first scarification I was very impulsive and largely unaware of the time and energy needed throughout the healing process. The piece on my thigh is considered large compared to most scarification pieces, and because of that it took almost a month to heal. A month of limping, itching and swelling, because of this I am dreading my second piece. The pain I can deal with, the immobility and general irritation of healing a wound that big is another matter. I would like it to be finished as it’s been half-done for almost two years now but taking the time out of work, and the fact that my job involves much more travel to London for meetings, means it’ll be much more of a hindrance this time around.

Another consideration is weight. I’ve gained some weight since my first scarification and although the design isn’t too warped, the original template I have for it will be smaller in comparison. For this reason I think I should wait until I’ve shifted the extra pounds I’ve gained before getting the cutting.

You can see my scarification below about two months after it was cut. I absolutely love it, but I am intimidated by the thought of healing another. Maybe I just need to “man up” and get on with it but now that I know what the process involves, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous.

Foot tattoos

Alice began the foot tattoos she designed for me today. The tattoo on my left foot is finished, although due to a lot of twitching and tiredness, the right just needs the shading.

Feet really are a sore spot to get tattooed, I can attest to that. The dots made me involuntarily twitch a lot, it was a bit embarrassing. Currently they’re wrapped up in cling film and a tad swollen, so I’ve put my feet up and Chris has given me a lovely cup of tea.

I’m hoping to get the right foot finished in September.
