Google reverse image search surprises

Today I was alerted to some new Google image search functionality by Myrmecos. The new feature allows you to drag and drop images or use URLs of existing images to find where the image has been published online, or images that are similar to it.

For some photographers and artists, this feature means they can track where they have been unaccredited for their work or any unauthorized use of their images. For me, I was mostly interested to see where some of my more “interesting” photos have appeared.

Last summer I was awarded a Daily Deviation on deviantArt for one of my scarification photos. Not long after I was bombarded with random people wanting to get to know me, people insulting my decision to get a scarification and of course a couple of crazies who wanted to get attention from me, be my best friend or just have sex with me. Because of the unwanted attention – all I wanted to do was share and look at art, not be stalked by emo teenage boys – I deleted my deviantArt account.

By the time I had deleted my account, the image had pretty much done the rounds on tumblr and various forums. I tried using TinEye to track where it had gone, but let’s face it, TinEye is pretty shitty. So when I found out about google reverse image search today I was straight on it. Most of my images had appeared on forums, tumblr pages and the odd blogspot but here are a few treasures I found along the way…

I found this blog post with some photos taken during my scarification that I hadn’t seen! Clearly they had been published on BMEzine, but this is the first time I’d seen them. Please excuse the little panties ;)

This one managed to annoy me. Using a photo from my scarification to promote tattoo removal. WHO THE HELL WOULD HAVE A TATTOO REMOVED LIKE THAT? This is a ridiculous website.

And finally, to distract from the gorey scarification photos, I found my Katamari painting on a rather cute Tumblr page.

Loving Project Noah

A little while ago I posted a about the inspiration I’d been drawing from Project Noah, and after a short lull in interest, I’ve recently been drawn back into this networking site and absolutely loving it! Since getting my rather sexy new HTC Desire HD, I’ve been using Project Noah’s app loads.

I highly recommend the site for people who love wildlife spotting and looking at gorgeous wildlife photos from around the world.

Here’s my profile

And here’s my main reason for this blog post – to brag about my new patch! It’s called ‘Invertebrate Specialist’ and is awarded for 20 invertebrate spottings. Simple things, eh?

Photo dump – May Bug

Also known as the Cockchafer beetle (don’t ask me why!) these guys appear around may, and have a habit of getting stuck in people’s hair. They are fairly common beetles but it’s been a while since I’ve seen one.

Their grubs are really destructive to crops and are classed as pests throughout Europe. Regardless of this, I think they’re pretty cute! Their fan-like antennae (Lamellate) are really pretty and I like the white, diamond-shaped markings down their sides.

This dude flew into my house a few weeks back so I thought I’d post up a few photos. These aren’t great, but I like them all the same.

Stratford Butterfly Farm Photos

The weekend we moved into our new place, Chris took me on a surprise trip to Stratford Butterfly Farm to practice some photography and generally be a bit geeky! It’s a really lovely butterfly farm and I especially enjoyed their arachnid exhibition.

It was the first time I’ve used my macro lens in quite a while so the focusing took a bit of getting used to again. I think the photos I took came out pretty well but it’ll be easier to practice now the sun has shown his face. There are some of my fave pics below (note: no butterflies!) I hope you like them.

Bath time for the snails

Around ten of my African land snails have now woken up from their winter hibernation. I thought they deserved a bath. Here are some pictures!

This is Cronos, he’s one of the largest of my bunch, but he’s a bit shy in these photos.

Epic Attic Adventures

I sent most of today in my boyfriend’s parent’s loft amongst the cobwebs, lacewings (I’m unsure why but there were loads in there*) and epic amounts of STUFF! The reason for this is that we’re moving in together at the end of the month and Chris wants to move his remaining stuff out of his parent’s house. Also, some of my decluttering obsession has rubbed off on him and it’s time to hit ebay!

We’re both big gamers and although I am usually against hording stuff, I adore my gaming collection. Chris has a wicked collection of Commodore 64 tapes which we found dotted around the place. Sadly some of the tapes seem to be missing cases or vise-versa, but I’m sure we’ll be able to sell any of them that we can’t save. It’s a shame that the Commodore 64 he owns doesn’t work because that means we can’t test them all. Fingers crossed they’re all in ok shape!

Hinding between the Commodore 64 tapes were some audio stories. I used to love these as a kid! I remember owning a Werebear and listing to the story tape that came with it almost every night. Talking of Werebears, holy crap this Werebear website brings back memories! I had the blue and yellow one growing up. Yeah, I am so finding a way of recording these Transformers tapes onto my PC so I add them to my iPod.

After sorting and re-boxing the Commodore 64 tapes, we moved on the THE TOYS! 80′s toys were the best toys ever! They were made of cheap plastic, they were virtually indestructible and most importantly, they were really creative. We pulled out a few toys today that are amazing technically. One of which was a Transformer (I’m ashamed to say I can’t remember his name) that changed into FIVE different things: a robot, a puma, a boat, a plane and a tank. So cool!

2010 – Photo Recap

Happy New Year! Finally 2011 is here, and I am really looking forward to seeing what this year brings. Last year I decided to recap 2009 in photos as it was a great way to reflect on the events of the year in a why that wasn’t too much of a heavy read or boring as sin. I’ve decided to do another recap for 2010 as it’s a great way to get back into blogging after my Christmas hiatus! So let’s begin… read more »
